Russian Open depth Championship 2019 takes place in Sharm-el-Sheikh on 20-22 May 2019. The competitions are based on the freediving club Freediving World where the depth is almost limitless, and in addition, there are the competitions with world record status according to the rules of AIDA International. At the moment there are 33 registered participants from 11 countries. Among them, there are winners of world and European championships, and the world and national record holders such as Alexey MolchanovAntonio Mogavero, Michelle Giurgola, Arnaud JeraldPete Botman, and Hyunho Seong.

For Russian freedivers, these competitions are the main opportunity to be chosen into the Russian national team, which will represent the county on AIDA depth World championship 2019 in Villefranche Sur Mer, France. Now just 3 Russian athletes have a “wild card” – Alexey Molchanov (FIM, CWT, CNF), Andrey Matveenko (FIM), and Marianna Gillespie (FIM, CNF).

At the championship the athletes will compete in 4 depth disciplines:

  • CNF
  • CWTB
  • FIM
  • CWT

Every athlete will have a chance to perform in 3 of them.

CWTB is a new discipline for AIDA competitions in which a world record among men has not been set yet. Therefore, it is very likely that several athletes will try to do this during the Russian championship. The main contender for the gold medal and the world record in CWTB is Alexey Molchanov, who is a current AIDA world record holder in CWT (the record is -130 m, it was set during the Vertical Blue 2018). According to AIDA rules, the world record in CWTB should not be less than 75% of the CWT world record, so the minimum depth for the world record registration is -98 m.

Alexey Molchanov will be the likely favorite in any disciplines he decides to compete in. However, in CWT Italian athletes Michele Giurgola (PB -110 m), Antonio Mogavero (PB -107 m) and French athlete Arnaud Jerald (PB 100 m) may compete for the 2nd and 3rd place. In the most complicated depth discipline, CNF, Michele Giurgola (PB 76 m) and Russian athlete Alexander Pavlov have a good chance to take medals. In FIM, main competitors are French athlete Mathieu Maraio (PB -94m), Antonio Mogavero (PB -86 m), and Dutch athlete Pete Botman.

Even more interesting is the contest between women. In CNF, the leading athlete is Marianna Gillespie, who has taken part in competitions since 2012. Her personal best is -61m and it is very unlikely that anyone will be able to show a better result. However, in the other 2 disciplines, we will witness a heavy competition between Marianna and 2 rather new athletes – Olga Rodnova (PB CWT -78 m, PB FIM -73 m) and Olga Markina (PB CWT -80 m, PB FIM -53 m).

All in all, it seems that the championship is going to be rather fascinating and remarkable. Stay tuned and follow the page of the event for the latest updates.
